Species Information[edit]
Classification[edit]
Begonia bacmeensis is a species of flowering plant in the family Begoniaceae. It is a member of section Jackia, which is characterized by its axillary dichasial cymose inflorescence with 4-tepaled staminate and pistillate flowers, bearing 3-locular ovaries, and each ovary locule with one placenta.
Distribution[edit]
Begonia bacmeensis is endemic to Vietnam, where it is found in the Bac Me Nature Reserve.
Habitat[edit]
Begonia bacmeensis is found in shady forests at elevations of 1,600-1,800 m.
Characteristics[edit]
Begonia bacmeensis is a rhizomatous plant with large, ovate leaves that are up to 35 cm long and 25 cm wide. The leaves are lobed at the margins and have a dark green color. The flowers are white or pink and are borne in clusters on long stalks.
Flower Details[edit]
The flowers of Begonia bacmeensis are unisexual and monoecious, meaning that male and female flowers are borne on the same plant. The male flowers have two sepals and four stamens. The female flowers have three sepals and four sepals that are fused together to form an ovary. The ovary is three-winged and has a long, slender style.
Etymology[edit]
The species is named after the Bac Me Nature Reserve, where it was discovered.
Comparison to Similar Species[edit]
Begonia bacmeensis is similar to Begonia dinhdui, but can be distinguished by its smaller leaves and flowers. Begonia dinhdui has leaves that are up to 40 cm long and 30 cm wide, and its flowers are up to 3 cm in diameter. Begonia bacmeensis has leaves that are up to 35 cm long and 25 cm wide, and its flowers are up to 2 cm in diameter.
