Begonia barosma
Species Information[edit]
Classification and Distribution[edit]
Begonia barosma is a new species within the Begonia sect. Coelocentrum Irmscher. It is found in Southeast Asia, primarily in China and Vietnam. The species was first described in [YEAR]. Its plant type is rhizomatous, and it belongs to the Coelocentrum Irmscher section.
Habitat[edit]
Begonia barosma thrives in the natural habitat of limestone karst forests, typically found in areas with elevations ranging from 220 m to 334 m.
Distribution[edit]
This species is currently known to exist in three populations along the Sino-Vietnamese border.
Characteristics[edit]
Begonia barosma is characterized by its perennial evergreen herb form, growing to a height of 20–35 cm. It has a stout and creeping rhizome measuring 10–15 cm in length and 15–25 mm in diameter. The leaves are basal, with petioles measuring 8–12 cm long and densely pilose with pale green lenticles. The leaf blade is asymmetric, widely ovate, 19–20 × 12–14 cm, with a caudate apex and oblique-cordate base. The margin is subentire, and venation is palmate with 6–9 primary veins. The leaf blade is fleshy and relatively flat, adaxially blackish-green along main veins, with random silver-white areas between the veins. It is sparsely puberulous adaxially and purplish-red and densely pilose abaxially along the main veins, while the areas between the veins are pale green and subgrabrous.
Flower Details[edit]
The species has unisexual flowers with 10–12 flowers per inflorescence. Staminate flowers have pale green pedicels, while pistillate flowers have pink pedicels. Tepals vary in color and shape, with specific measurements detailed in the full description.
Etymology[edit]
The specific epithet "barosma" refers to the extreme sweet smell of the flower during the blooming season.
Comparison to Similar Species[edit]
Begonia barosma shares morphological similarities with closely distributed B. lanternaria. However, there are distinctive differences in leaf blade coloration and flower tepals between the two species, detailed in the full description.
