Species Information[edit]

Classification and Distribution[edit]

Begonia babeana is a lithophytic, evergreen herb found in the central part of northern Vietnam, specifically in Bac Kan province (Ba Be national park). It primarily grows in primary and secondary dry broadleaved evergreen forests on highly eroded rocky crystalline limestone at elevations ranging from 200 to 300 meters above sea level. This species belongs to Sect. Coelocentrum Irmsch.

Habitat[edit]

Begonia babeana thrives in the humid crevices of vertical, shady limestone cliffs.

Distribution[edit]

This begonia species is endemic to lowland limestone areas in the center of northern Vietnam in Bac Kan province (Ba Be district).

Characteristics[edit]

Begonia babeana is a stemless, regularly monoecious herb with a thick, creeping rhizome. The rhizome is greenish to brown, with fibrose roots facing the ground. The leaves are distant along the apical portion of the rhizome, with short petioles and glossy, dark green leaf blades. The blade is broadly oblique-ovate, unlobed, and shallowly crenulate to irregularly denticulate along the margin.

Flower Details[edit]

The flowers of Begonia babeana are monosexual and pedicellate. Staminate flowers have 2 opposite sepals and 2 opposite narrowly obovate petals. Pistillate flowers have 2 sepals and 1 petal. The styles are connate at the base into a short common stalk, and the stigmas are densely setose-papillose and linear-cristate.

Etymology[edit]

The species name "babeana" refers to the Ba Be national park in Bac Kan province, where the plant was discovered.

Notes[edit]

Begonia babeana is closely related to B. semiparietalis but can be distinguished by its smaller plant size, brownish indumentum, glossy dark green leaf surface, and glabrous sepals and ovary.
