Begonia aptera is a rhizomatous species native to Eastern Malesia, specifically found in Sulawesi, Moluccas, and West New Guinea.
Habitat
This species is commonly found in primary to secondary lowland, hill, and upland forests at elevations ranging from 200 to 1500 meters.
Characteristics
Begonia aptera exhibits significant morphological variation among populations in Sulawesi. These variations include leaf size and shape, leaf margin serration, indumentum density (ranging from glabrous to densely hairy), and fruit morphology. It typically has three-locular ovaries and fruits, but occasional individuals with aberrant fruit morphology (two- or four-locular fruits) have been observed.

Comparison to Similar Species
Begonia aptera is part of the Begonia longifolia species complex and shares morphological similarities with other taxa within this complex. Differentiation among these species is mainly based on leaf shape and leaf margin characters. However, transitional forms exist within this morphological space.
