Classification and Distribution
Begonia putaoensis is morphologically similar to B. scintillans and is known only from the Putao District in Kachin State, Northern Myanmar.
Habitat
This species grows on moist rocky slopes of tropical montane forests at elevations of 500–900 meters.
Characteristics
Begonia putaoensis is a monoecious perennial herb, 10–25 cm tall, with a creeping rhizome. The leaves are ovate to widely ovate, dark green with gray or light-green areas, and the inflorescence is an axillary sub-cory.
Flower Details
The staminate flowers have pedicels that are white or pink and glabrous, with 4 (rarely 6) tepals that are pink and ovate to suborbicular. The pistillate flowers have 5 (rarely 6) tepals that are pink and ovate, with a glabrous, 2-loculed ovary.
Etymology
The species epithet 'putaoensis' refers to the type locality of the species in the Putao District, Kachin State, Northern Myanmar.
