Species Information

Classification and Distribution

Begonia inggitiae, a perennial monoecious herb, is endemic to Kalimantan, Indonesia. It is part of the section Petermannia and is known from several localities in Central Kalimantan (Tumbang Samba, Kahayan) and West Kalimantan (Kapuas Hulu).

Habitat

This species is found in lowland mixed dipterocarp forest.

Characteristics

Begonia inggitiae has a prostrate and creeping stem, with dense indumentum of multicellular bristle hairs. Leaves are ovate to elliptic, 5.5–8 cm long, with red bristles between the veins on the adaxial surface.

Flower Details

It has protandrous inflorescences with male flowers having 32-35 stamens and female flowers with ciliate wing margins.

Etymology

The species is named in honor of the collector of the living specimen, Inggit Puji Astuti, from Bogor Botanic Gardens.

Comparison to Similar Species

Begonia inggitiae is similar to B. crockerensis but differs in stipule shape, bristles on the adaxial leaf surface, and fruit wing margins.
