Begonia tarangban is a monoecious perennial herb found near Tarangban Falls in Calbayog City, Samar Island, Philippines.
Distribution[edit]
This species is endemic to Tarangban Falls, growing on semi-shaded rocky slopes near the falls at an elevation of 160 meters.
Characteristics[edit]
- Stem: Prostrate, green to brown, sparsely hirsute. - Stipules: Pink, asymmetrically ovate-triangular, keeled and hirsute abaxially. - Leaves: Alternate, with obliquely ovate blades, cordate base, and almost entire margin. - Inflorescence: Axillary, dichotomously branching panicle. - Flowers: Staminate and pistillate flowers with distinct tepals and other features. - Capsule: Unique with unequal triangular wings.
Etymology[edit]
The species is named after Tarangban Falls, its place of discovery.
Proposed Conservation Status[edit]
Begonia tarangban is known only from the type locality at Tarangban Falls. Despite protection as part of the Samar Island Natural Park, potential habitat disturbance due to tourism may threaten the species. Therefore, it is proposed as Vulnerable (VU D2) according to IUCN criteria.
