Species Information[edit]
Classification and Distribution[edit]
Begonia arachnoidea is a rhizomatous begonia species. It is native to the Guangxi Zhuangzu Autonomous Region in China.
Habitat[edit]
This begonia species is typically found in mixed bamboo and scrubby vegetation at the foot of limestone hills, particularly on semishaded rocky slopes.
Characteristics[edit]
Begonia arachnoidea is characterized by its peltate leaves, which are suborbicular or broadly ovate, papery, and deeply green or brownish. The leaves are densely shortly setose and hispid-setulose on the upper surface and densely hispidulous-pilose on all veins on the lower surface. The venation of the leaves resembles a spiderweb.
Flower Details[edit]
The flowers of Begonia arachnoidea are white in color. Staminate flowers have four pink tepals, while carpellate flowers have three pink tepals. Stamens range from 26 to 44.
Etymology[edit]
The specific epithet "arachnoidea" refers to the leaf venation of this begonia species, which resembles a spiderweb.
Comparison to Similar Species[edit]
Begonia arachnoidea shares similarities with Begonia umbraculifolia but can be differentiated by various features, including its stout rhizomes, congested internodes, ovate-triangular stipules, and the characteristics of its leaves and pedicels.
