Species Information
Classification and Distribution
Begonia poilanei Kiew is a monoecious rhizomatous lithophytic herb found in China, Laos (specifically on the Bolaven Plateau), and Vietnam.
Habitat
It is known to grow on top of the Bolaven Plateau in Laos, at an elevation of 1,270 meters.
Distribution
This species is distributed in China, Laos, and Vietnam.
Characteristics
- Height: 5–15 cm tall. - Rhizome: Cylindrical tuber, smooth, light brown, 2–4 cm long, 5–8 mm in diameter. - Leaves: Obliquely cordate, 6–7 × 7–9 cm, apex acute-lanceolate or aristate, base cordate, margin serrate with cilia, puberulous on both sides. - Flowers: Monoecious with staminate and pistillate flowers. Staminate flowers have 4 pink tepals, while pistillate flowers have 3 pink tepals.

Etymology
The species name "poilanei" honors E. Poilane, who first discovered and collected this species in 1931.
Comparison to Similar Species
Has similarities with Begonia murina and Begonia fimbristipula
References
The species was originally described by Kiew in 2007. It was also described as Begonia intermedia D.K.Tian & Y.H.Yan in 2014 and Begonia wuzhishanensis C.-I Peng, X.H. Jin & S.M. Ku in 2014. These latter names are now treated as synonyms of Begonia poilanei Kiew.
