Classification and Distribution[edit]
Begonia ×breviscapa is a monoecious, herbaceous begonia species. It represents a natural hybrid found in Donglan Xian, northwestern Guangxi, China. This hybrid is sterile when collected, but flowering specimens were later obtained through cultivation.
Characteristics[edit]
- Rhizome: Creeping, 6-13 mm thick, with pilose internodes. - Stipules: Caducous, ovate-triangular, asymmetric, weakly keeled, with an entire margin and an aristate apex. - Leaves: Alternate; petiole 9-26 cm long, villous; blade obliquely broadly ovate, peltate or subpeltate, with a papery texture and white spots on the adaxial surface. It is moderately setulose and brownish-reddish or green on the abaxial surface. - Inflorescences: Axillary; peduncle (scape) 1.5-5 cm long, pilose or villous-pilose; flowers 5-8 in dichasial cymes. - Staminate Flower: Tepals 4, white, with outer tepals broadly obovate and inner tepals elliptic to oblanceolate. - Carpellate Flower: Tepals 3, with outer tepals suborbicular or broadly obovate and inner tepal oblanceolate or elliptic. - Ovary: Trigonous-ellipsoid, pilose or sparsely so, weakly 3-winged.
Etymology[edit]
The specific epithet "breviscapa" refers to the shortness of the scape.
Chromosome Cytology[edit]
The somatic chromosome number of Begonia ×breviscapa is 2n = 30. This includes two longer metacentric chromosomes and 28 shorter ones. Satellite chromosomes were not observed.
Notes[edit]
Begonia ×breviscapa is a natural hybrid between B. variifolia and B. leprosa found in a limestone cave. It bears similarities to B. setulosopeltata but is distinct due to its short peduncle and pubescent inflorescences.
