Species Information
Classification
Begonia burabod is a monoecious perennial herb found in the Municipality of Paranas, Samar Island, Philippines.
Distribution
This species is abundant on shaded and moist soil slopes at an elevation of 150 meters.
Characteristics
- Stem: Prostrate, brown, villous. - Stipules: Brownish pink to magenta, ovate-triangular, strongly keeled and villous abaxially. - Leaves: Alternate, with oblique ovate blades, irregularly angular margin, and white spots between veins on the upper surface. - Inflorescence: Axillary, bisexual, cymosely branching panicle. - Flowers: Staminate and pistillate flowers with distinct tepals and other features. - Capsule: Equal, rounded wings.
Etymology
The species is named after the Waray word "burabod," which means spring, reflecting its moist habitat.
Proposed Conservation Status
Begonia burabod is abundant, with numerous populations observed. According to IUCN criteria, it is proposed to be placed under the Least Concern (LC) category due to its widespread presence.
