becoming woody, glabrous, 8-10 mm in diameter, persistent. Deciduous leaves, petiole 3-12 cm long; blade asymmetrical-ovate, acuminate at the top, rope at the base, membranous, 8-14 X 4-7 cm, glabrous, or nearly, on both sides, bright green above, green, paler below, margins slightly reddish, generally undulating, often rather coarsely twice dentees; 3-5 basal veins on one side, one only on the other and 1-3 lateral veins, all finely projecting on the underside. Stipules most often lanceolate, almost filiform at the top, 10-25 mm long, early deciduous. bisexual inflorescence, in terminal or subterminal bipolar cymes, often erect, pluriflorous; pale pink flowers; peduncle 8-14 cm long, glabrous; ovate bracts, 6 x 5 mm, glabrous, deciduous. MALE flowers have 2 oval tepals, ropes, 10 x 10 mm. Stamens 22-25 fasciculate, without column; yellow anther, 2-4 mm long, longitudinally dehiscent, subsessile or with extremely short threads. FEMALE flowers a. 4-5 tepals including a smaller, 8-10 x 4 mm, obovate-elongate or ovate-elliptical; pedicelled length of 7-12 mm. Ovary 6-20 x 2-6 mm, has 3 wings, one large 5-7 mm wide, triangular-oblique and two small 1.5-2 mm wide; styles 3, yellow, bi- or trifid, 5 mm long; stigmatizing branches of variable length; stigma crescent ± strongly spiral at the tip. Oval capsule, glabrous, 18 x 10 mm, has a large wing broadly oval or triangular-oval, up to 30 mm wide, and two small wings rarely exceeding 5 mm, all strongly nerve-reticulate. Seeds globose or very short, 0.3 (-0.5) x 0.2 mm approx. a network of long stitches more or less irregular. - Pl. 20, p. 69. Cultivates in the Garden "les Cedres" of Marnier-Lapostolle in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat under the n° 12 (sending of Humbert of February 26, 1960, Humbert 32472 or 32591 or 32608, photo 9140/8).
