B. humbertii

glabro, rubescente, 2-5 cm longo, limbo valde asymetrico oblique ovato, glabro, utraque pagina triste viride, facie inferiore rubescenti, marginibus integris, stipulis ovato-acuminatis, virescentibus. Inflorescentiae axillares, pedunculo 2,5-10 cm longo, in dichasia 6-8 flora brevi instructae, bracteis membranaceis, albescentibus, obovalibus, pedicellis usque ad 30 mm longis. Florum MALE tepala 2, orbicularia; stamina 14-20, fasciculata, filamentis liberis 1 mm longis, ad basim in colunmam 0,5 mm longam connatis, antheris 4 mm longis. Florum FEMALE tepala 4, exteriora 18X 18 mm, interiora paulo minora et angustiora. Styli 3, 7 mm longi, bifidi, apice spiraliter semel torti. Ovarium oblongum, glabrum. Fructus baccatus, ovoideo-globosus. glaber, 25 mm longus, 18 mm in diametro, alis nullis. Plant suffrutescent, with hairless, woody stems up to 80-120 cm tall and 5-13 mm in diameter; short internodes. Leaves petiolate red, glabrous, 2-5 cm long; blade very strongly asymmetrical, obliquely ovate, shortly acuminate at the apex, obliquely rope at base with one lobe much more developed than the other, dark green above, reddish beneath, glabrous on the face, 6-13 X 5,5- 9 cm, whole edges a little undulate; 5 main veins at the base, one extending the petiole, one in a lobe, 3 in the other lobe, all reddish, finely projecting on both sides; oblique secondary veins; network of tertiary veins especially visible towards the margins. Stipules verdatres, oval-oblong, acuminous, 1-3 x 0.5-1 cm. axillary inflorescence in bisexual cymes of 6-8 flowers; peduncle 2.5-10 cm, branching short, verdatres or brunatres; bracts whitish, membranous, obovate to suborbicular, 12 X 10 mm; pedicelled up to 30 mm long. MALE flowers has 2 orbicular tepals, 10-24 x 11-24 mm. Stamens 14-20, fasciculates, with threads welded at the base on 0,5 mm, free part long of 1 mm; yellow, oblong anther, 4 mm long. FEMALE flower has 4 tepals, the outer suborbicular, 18 x 18 mm, the internal smaller, oval-lengthened, 18 X 11-15 mm. Ovary oblong, triangular in section, glabrous; styles 3, 5 mm long, bifid; stigma cross-straightened and spiraled at the tip. Ovoid berry has a subglobose, 25 X 18 mm, glabrous, greenish then canopy, has a surface marbree-warty on the fresh. Seeds oblong, large, 0.8 mm long, light brown, with reticle tissue, with rectangular meshes occupying the proximal half. - Pl. 32 p. 103. Very close species of Begonia aptera Roxb. Mascarene, or this plant is called "sorrel marronne", "sorrel sorrel". B. humbertii is distinguished by its flowers MALE has 2 tepals (4 in B. aptera) and its yellow anthere (white in B. aptera). The port of the plant, as well as the glabrous leaves, strongly asymmetrical, recall the B. madecassa Keraudren, but the latter has ovaries and capsules very clearly wings.
