B. 'Smaragdina'

The ground color is a brilliant, velvety, yet relatively light May green. A deep brownish-green shading—which gradually transitions into the finer veins—surrounds the base and the lighter main veins radiating from it. Additionally, the leaf features a silvery band an inch wide—similar to that of B. rex—extending to the leaf tip and bordered by a narrow, reddish-brown margin. The surface is completely smooth, whereas the edge is finely ruffled, toothed, and ciliate. Liebig presented 18 hybrids with B. rex as the mother at the Spring 1860 meeting of The Society for Promotion of Horticulture in Berlin.
