B. ‘Imperator’

1860 Le Bon Jardinier New Begonias; Begonia 'Imperator', Hybrid, Hort. - Splendid variety, exhibited this year for the first time by MM. Thibaut and Keteler, who obtained it, as well as the following one, by artificially fertilizing B. splendida with B. rex. Few species, that we know, present more considerable leaves. The B. 'Imperator' borrowed from the B. Splendida of conspicuous stalks and numerous blood-red hairs, while retaining the shape of the B. rex leaves and their general coloring. As in the latter species, we see, on a purplish-green background, a broad silvery band which occupies at least three-quarters of their leaf surface. Many silvery dots, scattered. on the dark border of the leaf, add to the beauty of this beautiful leaf and establishment, a sharp difference between the mother plant and its product. An intense wine red covers the entire underside of the leaf. Pale pink flowers, large, the females bearing extensive hairy stigmas, bright yellow.
